NTA on 22nd April 2024 has started the registration for UGC NET June 2024 exams.
With this NTA has also introduced some very major changes that are exciting and interesting.
We have covered all these changes, and other relevant information related to UGC NET 2024 notification such as important dates, eligibility criteria, syllabus, application process and more.
Candidates who are new to UGC NET, let us explain it briefly for you.
NTA (National Testing Agency) body conducts the UGC NET (National Eligibility Test) for JRF (Junior Research Fellowship) and Assistant Professor jobs.
It is important for any looking to making a career as an assistant professor or a researcher to qualify UGC NET exam.
There are total 83 subjects in UGC NET exams.
Almost all subjects in humanities, languages, commerce, management, and some science subjects such as computer science, electronic science, forensic science and other social sciences and environmental subjects are covered.
However, for the core science subjects you will need to appear for NET exam conducted by CSIR (Council of Scientific & Industrial Research).
UGC NET exam is conducted each year twice – one in June month and other in December month.
Furthermore, the exam consists of two paper – Paper 01 General and Paper 02 subject paper.

Major Changes in UGC NET June 2024
- OMR exam mode (Computer-Based-Test mode removed) earlier UGC NET exam was conducted in CBT (computer based test) mode.
- Introduction of Ph.D. category for qualification, which allows candidates to qualify only for PhD.
- Now, 4- year UG degree with 75% marks candidates can sit for exam and if qualified will be eligible for JRF and PhD or PhD only.

About UGC NET June 2024 exams
As per the UGC NET June 2024 notification, there is new category introduced, which is Category 03 – Admission to PhD only.
Following is the break up of eligibility qualification in UGC NET:
Category 01: qualified for JRF, NET (Assistant Professor) and PhD Admission |
Category 02: qualified for NET and PhD admission |
Category 03: qualified for PhD admission only |
Important details related to categories:
- Category 01 – JRF qualified candidates will get PhD admission only the basis of interview and exempted from entrance tests.
- Category 02 and 03 candidates will also be exempted from PhD entrance tests for admission.
- Category 02 and 03 candidates NET qualification will get them 70% weightage in PhD admission and rest 30% will depend upon interview or viva-voce performance.
- Category 02 and 03 candidates marks will be valid for only 1 year for PhD admissions.
UGC NET June 2024 Exam Pattern (Updated)
As per the UGC NET June 2024 notification, the mode of examination has been changed from CBT (Computer Based Test) mode to OMR based mode. This is a big change. Now candidates will get to attempt UGC NET June 2024 exams in pen or pencil-paper mode. Apart from this, there are no changes.

No negative marking is applicable and all questions are compulsory.

Eligibility Criteria for UGC NET June 2024 (Updated)
As per the notification for UGC NET June 2024, following is the eligibility criteria:
- Any Masters degree with minimum 55% (50% marks in case of OBC NCL, SC, ST, PwD and third gender)
- Masters degree final year result awaited candidates are eligible to apply, however, they will need to prove above eligibility within 2 years for NET and JRF and 1 year for PhD admission
- 4-year UG degree holders with minimum 75% marks are eligible to sit for exam and qualify for JRF and PhD not for assistant professor job
- Candidates in their final year 4-year UG degree are eligible to apply provided they prove their eligibility as given above within 2 years for JRF and 1 year for PhD admission
- Age limit for JRF is 30 years and there is not age limit for NET and PhD admission
