It is by rule that UGC affiliated universities have to hire NET or NET JRF qualified teachers only for the post of adhoc/assistant/associate professor or for the research.

In 2015, UGC have had handed NET exam to CBSE after the consent of HRD Ministry. Making CBSE India’s largest exam conducting body.

However, in 2017 National Testing Agency was formed to handle top entrance and competitive exams. The conducting of NET exam was handed over to NTA after CBSE.

NTA (National Testing Agency) made changes to the exam pattern, syllabus and introduced CBT (computer based testing) to the NET exams.
