The Department of Political Science at CU is known for its in-depth curriculum and experienced faculty. 

It aims to build strong analytical and research skills among students. 

The M.A. Political Science course is designed to help students understand complex political systems, ideologies, international relations, public policy, and political theory. 

It also prepares students for careers in academia, civil services, research, journalism, and policy-making.

The M.A. Political Science programme is a two-year, four-semester course. 

It is open to students who have completed their B.A. (Hons.) in Political Science from a recognised university. 

CU follows a dual-mode admission process. This includes:

  • 60% of seats reserved for CU students, selected based on merit.
  • 40% of seats open for non-CU and CU students through a written entrance exam.

Eligibility Criteria for M.A. Political Science at Calcutta University (2025)

Part A: For Calcutta University Candidates (60% Category):

  • You must have completed a B.A. (Hons.) in Political Science from Calcutta University (including its affiliated colleges).
  • Minimum qualifying marks are as per CU norms (usually a pass in Hons. is sufficient to apply in this category).
  • No entrance test is required. Admission is based purely on merit (marks in Honours paper).

Part B: For Non-CU Candidates and CU Students Applying in Entrance Category (40% Category):

  • You must have completed a B.A. (Hons.) in Political Science from any UGC-recognised university.
  • CU students can also apply in this category if they want to appear for the entrance test.
  • Selection is based only on performance in the written entrance exam.
  • There is no cut-off percentage officially announced, but qualifying the entrance test is mandatory.

Selection Process for M.A. Political Science Admission at CU (2025)

Part A: For CU Candidates (60% of total seats)

  • Reserved for students who have completed B.A. (Hons.) in Political Science from Calcutta University (including its affiliated colleges).
  • No entrance test is required.
  • Selection is done purely on the basis of merit, i.e., marks obtained in the Political Science Honours papers of your undergraduate degree.
  • A merit list will be published for this category.
Part B: For Non-CU Candidates and CU Candidates Applying via Entrance (40% of total seats)

  • Open to candidates from other universities (within or outside West Bengal) with a valid B.A. (Hons.) in Political Science.
  • CU candidates may also apply under this category if they wish to appear for the entrance test.
  • Selection is based only on performance in the written entrance examination.
  • Academic marks are not considered in this category.
  • A separate merit list is prepared based on entrance test scores.
Can CU Students Apply in Both Categories?

Yes. Students from Calcutta University can apply under both 60% (merit) and 40% (entrance) categories. However, if selected in both, they must choose one and withdraw from the other before final admission.

Reservation Policy

SC, ST, OBC-A, OBC-B, PWD, and EWS reservations apply as per Government of West Bengal rules. Reserved category candidates must submit valid supporting certificates at the time of application and admission.

Step-by-Step Application Process for CU M.A. English 2025

Step 1: Visit the Official Portal

Step 2: Register Yourself

  • Click on “New Registration.”
  • Provide basic details: name, email, mobile number, date of birth, etc.
  • Create a login ID and password.
  • Verify email/mobile through OTP (if applicable).

Step 3: Fill Out the Application Form

  • After login, select your subject: M.A. Political Science (POLCU).
  • Enter your academic details:
    • UG degree details (B.A. English Hons. only)
    • University/College name
    • Year of passing
    • Marks obtained/percentage
  • Choose your category (General/SC/ST/OBC-A/OBC-B/PWD/EWS).
  • Select whether you’re applying as a CU student or Non-CU student.
  • CU students can apply under both 60% (merit) and 40% (entrance) categories.

Step 4: Upload Required Documents

Make sure all scanned files are clear and legible. You will need:

  • Recent passport-size photograph
