Calcutta University has started registration for MA English Entrance 2025. 

The last date to application is 8th August 2025. 

The University of Calcutta (CU) is one of India’s oldest and most respected universities.

It was established in 1857 and is located in Kolkata.

It holds top national rankings and has earned high NAAC accreditation recently. .

 

About MA English Course at CU

CU offers a two-year full-time M.A. in English Language & Literature.

This programme is open only to candidates with a B.A. Honors in English.

The intake for the University department (ENGCU) is around 245 seats.

The course covers a wide range of subjects.

You will study modern and classical literature from English and Indian authors.

Themes include Postcolonialism, Gender Studies, American and British Literature, and Stylistics and Linguistics.

This blend equips students for careers in teaching, research, journalism, and creative writing.

Each semester features core papers and internal assessments.

Students must earn at least 40% marks in each paper including internal evaluation to pass.

The structure follows University of Calcutta’s CBCS (Choice Based Credit System) format.

Admission is merit-based.

You must apply online via the CU PG portal.

Required documents include your final-year marksheet, photo, signature, and category/domicile certificates (if applicable).

Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility criteria for M.A. English admission at Calcutta University (CU) are as follows:

1. Educational Qualification (Essential)

  • You must have a B.A. (Hons.) degree in English from a UGC-recognized university.
  • General category candidates must have at least 50% marks in aggregate.
  • SC/ST/PWD/OBC-A/OBC-B candidates must have 45% marks in aggregate.

2. Category of Applicants

There are two main categories of applicants:

  • PART A: CU Candidates (60% of seats)
    • These candidates have completed B.A. (Hons.) in English from the University of Calcutta (including affiliated colleges).
    • They are selected directly on the basis of merit (no admission test required).
  • PART B: Non-CU Candidates (40% of seats)
    • These include applicants from other universities (within or outside West Bengal).
    • Selection is based on an admission test (written exam) conducted by CU.
  • Foreign Students: Foreign candidates with equivalent qualifications can also apply. They must go through the international students admission process via CU’s foreign cell or affiliated channels.
  • Age Limit: There is no age limit for applying to the M.A. English programme.

1. History of English Literature: British Literature from Chaucer to the 20th Century

Periods: Elizabethan, Romantic, Victorian, Modernist, etc.

2. Literary Theory & Criticism: Basic understanding of literary movements, critical theories

Thinkers like Aristotle, Dryden, Eliot, Derrida, Freud, Marx

3. Unseen Passage / Literary Analysis: You may be asked to analyze a poem or prose extract

Focus on form, themes, figurative language, and tone

4. Indian Writing in English: Authors like Raja Rao, R.K. Narayan, Anita Desai, Arundhati Roy

 

Selection Process

Selection Process for MA English Admission 2025 at Calcutta University

The admission is divided into two categories:

Part A: For CU Students (60% of total seats)

Eligibility: Applicants who completed B.A. (Hons.) in English from Calcutta University (including affiliated colleges).

Selection Basis: Merit-based — no entrance test is required.

Merit List: Prepared based on marks obtained in B.A. English Honours.

Part B: For Non-CU Students (40% of total seats)

Eligibility: Applicants from other universities, both within and outside West Bengal, with a valid B.A. (Hons.) in English.

Selection Basis: Entrance test (written exam) conducted by Calcutta University.

Merit List: Based on performance in entrance test only — previous academic marks are not considered in this category.

Important: Open Option for CU Students – CU students can apply in both categories (60% and 40%). If selected in both, they must choose one seat and withdraw from the other.

 

Application Process

Step-by-Step Application Process for CU M.A. English 2025

Step 1: Visit the Official Portal

Step 2: Register Yourself

  • Click on “New Registration.”
  • Provide basic details: name, email, mobile number, date of birth, etc.
  • Create a login ID and password.
  • Verify email/mobile through OTP (if applicable).

Step 3: Fill Out the Application Form

  • After login, select your subject: M.A. English (ENGCU).
  • Enter your academic details:
  • UG degree details (B.A. English Hons. only)
  • University/College name
  • Year of passing
  • Marks obtained/percentage
  • Choose your category (General/SC/ST/OBC-A/OBC-B/PWD/EWS).
  • Select whether you’re applying as a CU student or Non-CU student.
  • CU students can apply under both 60% (merit) and 40% (entrance) categories.

Step 4: Upload Required Documents

Make sure all scanned files are clear and legible. You will need:

  • Recent passport-size photograph
  • Scanned signature
  • Final year marksheet or grade card
  • Caste certificate (if applicable)
  • PWD/Domicile certificate (if applicable)

Step 5: Pay the Application Fee

  • Pay online via Net Banking, Debit/Credit Card, or UPI.
  • Application fee: Rs. 400/- for General and OBC categories and Rs. 200/- for reserved categories.

  • Separate merit lists will be published for:

Step 9: Counselling & Admission

  • Shortlisted candidates will be called for document verification and admission.
  • You will need to submit original documents and pay the admission fees at this stage.
