GATE English 2022 is one of the entrance exams of GATE to get admission to IITs in India for humanities and social sciences graduates.

Last year, a new framework of GATE entrance exam was introduced under which humanities and social sciences (HSS) graduates were allowed to apply for humanities and social sciences PG courses at IITs.

Under the HSS GATE paper, English literature has also been introduced. That allows English literature graduates to appear for GATE and secure a seat for MA English Literature and related courses at IITs.

However, since last year humanities and social sciences students are facing a lot of problems in understanding what exactly GATE is, whether they should appear for it or not, in which courses at IITs I can get admission, and what benefits do I get from GATE?

In this article, we tried to answer all your queries in detail in easy to understand language. At any point, if you want to ask questions, feel free to use the comment section below. We would love to resolve your queries in detail.

What is GATE English Literature 2022?

If you’re an English Literature graduate then probably you would want to give GATE for multiple reasons. Let me list out all of those reasons for you:

1. If you’re able to secure a good rank, then you could easily secure a seat at IIT Madras for the MA English course.
2. Admission on the basis of GATE ranking, will also make you eligible for Rs. 12,500/- monthly stipend.
3. You can use GATE score for jobs in Public Sector Undertakings such as Indian Oil etc.
4. GATE score can be used as proof of your excellence in English literature, which you can use for private sector jobs.
5. GATE scores are valid for 3 years, which means if in future new courses are launched at IIT and also more foreign universities start accepting HSS GATE scores, you can apply.

Why should students from Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) appear for GATE exam?

There are a few reasons that can help you to make a solid decision, that are as following:

1. IIT Madras is offering admission to MA English course with 47 seats, you could get a chance to secure a seat there.
2. After admission, you will be eligible for 12,500/- monthly stipend.
3. If any PSU (public sector undertakings) offer jobs under the HSS category, then you will be eligible to apply.
4. You can use your GATE score to get admission in other HSS courses at IIT apart from MA English at IIT Madras.
5. There’s a high possibility that IITs may launch new courses under the HSS category in 2-3 years. As your GATE score is valid for 3 years, therefore, you can use your GATE score to get admission.
